It is always a great idea to update to the latest macOS Software. Recently, Apple launched the new macOS Ventura operating system with plenty of new and beneficial features.
I’m always pretty good at updating my macOS in a timely manner. However, this recent update caused me a great deal of frustration when I could not longer properly connect to my External Display Second Monitor.
Both of my screens turned into “broken lines” where I could not see anything.
Thankfully, I was able to disconnect my External Display Second Monitor so that my Main Display would function properly.
After painfully attempting many different “workarounds” to get my displays working properly, I finally figured it out!
How to Fix macOS Ventura when your Second Monitor External Display is not working
Situation 1: When only your External Display Second Monitor is having issues
- Start by connecting your second display to your Mac.
- The broken lines should now appear on your external display.
- After that happens, go to Launchpad –> Others and open Activity Monitor.
- Now search WindowServer, select it, and click on the “x-circle icon” in the menu bar. Then click on Force Quit.
- You will now be logged out. Then log back in and the WindowsServer will restart itself within a few seconds.
- Now when the application restarts, it will notice that the external monitor is already connected. This should resolve your issue!

Situation 2: When both your Mac and External Display Second Monitor is having issues
- Start by disconnecting the second display from your Mac.
- Afterwards, your Mac’s display should work perfectly.
- Next, go to Launchpad –> Others and open Terminal.
- Copy & Paste the command below:
sudo sleep 20; sudo kill -9 $(pgrep WindowServer)
(The Terminal app may ask you to confirm the command by typing your password. Please do so then press Enter)
- 5. Then immediately connect your Second Monitor External Display (the broken lines will appear, and that is okay).
- Within 20 seconds, the WindowServer process will end and you will be logged out of your Mac.
- 6. Log back in with your user credentials and WindowServer will restart.
- It will notice that the external monitor is already connected and your issue will be resolved!
